The New Decade
As we welcome the new decade it’s good to look back over the past year and to also look forward to what we can expect in the next few years. 2009 was hopefully the bottoming out of the worldwide recession that has affected so many of us in our wholesale and retail businesses. The downturn in business has challenged many of us but has also given us reason to look at our entire situations and make the necessary changes that will make us better more profitable businesses in the future.
Looking back, the highlight of 2009 had to be the Centenary Congress in London. Alan Hawkins and the staff of the BHF Group did a splendid job of hosting delegations from throughout the world. The city of London and the social venues of the Congress were second to none and the honor of meeting HRH, The Princess Royal was a privilege that no one will soon forget. The speakers during the business sessions were knowledgeable about European and world economies. A truly wonderful and informative meeting was had by all.
Looking forward at IHA, plans are underway for the 2011 Congress which will be held for the first time in the United States. The North American Retail Hardware Association will be hosting delegations in Washington, D.C. during July 13th thru 15th of 2011. The U.S. Capitol will be a welcoming location from a business, political and sightseeing standpoint with many options before, during and after the Congress. Attendees at the IHA Congress are invited to stay for the entire NRHA Convention and All-Industry Conference. For more information contact dallen@nrha.org or go to www.iha2011.com .
The new decade brings us hope and cautions optimism that our economies will grow and we will find prosperity again knocking on our door step.

NEW YEAR MESSAGE FROM
THE CHAIRMAN
Unfortunately we had a very sad end of the year for the French Hardware Federation with the sudden death of our President:
Jean-Paul MAURIN in December of this year: Jean-Paul was a great supporter of IHA and a great French president.
Thank you very much, to the British Hardware Federation, who made the IHA Centenary Congress, in London 2009, such a great event.
We will remember the HRH The Princess Royal addresses, the conferences and discussions about it the gala dinner and all the contacts we established there, for the future.
Concerning my idea of a twin countries meeting, we will do it in Paris, and I can announce you that a delegation of the British Hardware Federation will be received in France 19 and 20 March 2010. Exchanges and visits are anticipated there.
I am pleased to see that the new members of the Managing Committee are keen to speak about the future of IHA at Las Vegas in May 2010.
I send to all of you my best wishes for a very happy and successful New Year.

GOOD HEALTH - CHEERS.
Very many thanks to everyone so many people from all over the world of hardware and housewares for their good wishes. I have been making good progress since my hospital operation for an aortic aneurysm on 27 October. The doctors advised that a fit young man should need three months to return to 'normal', and added that I was not young or fit! You will be glad to hear that I am making good progress. I can only advise that even today after 2 months... my Va Va Vroom is still only on about Va Va although the Vroom is at last visible. I am slowly regaining weight and energy, and I am very thankful to Isobelle for her nursing care and patience.
I now look forward to the meeting of the Managing Committee in May when we shall discuss the details for the next IHA Congress in Washington DC, and exchange our ideas for changes to the structure and responsibilities of the IHA organisation.
