THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION WORLDWIDE STAFF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

In the spirit of mutual protection and enhancement the International Federation Worldwide Staff Development Programme aims to provide encouragement and support for trainees to spend time living and working in other member countries.

The programme provides the opportunity to gain valuable professional and personal experience. Participants not only benefit from other countries' skills but often make life-long friends and business contacts.

The programme aims:

  • To enable young people employed in the hardware business to learn about trading conditions and practices in other parts of the world.
  • To prepare them for the tasks of being an independent retailer in the hardware trade.
  • To allow them to experience different cultures and ways of life.
  • To encourage them to act as ambassadors for their own country.
  • To establish friendships across international borders.
  • To strengthen and improve mutual understanding between member countries to the benefit of all members of the IHA

"I would definitely recommend the programme. I can't wait to put what I've learned into action in my job back home."

Participants may spend between three months to a year living and working in one of 20 participating countries. To be eligible you must be at least 18 and should be employed full time in the housewares or hardware business.

While there are no official language restrictions we would advise applicants to choose a country with whose language they are familiar since you will be employed full time and will need to be able to interact with colleagues and customers alike.

The IHA will make all introductions through the National Trade organisation and your host business will assist you in finding accomodation. However, each participant will be responsible for his or her own travel, accomodation and living expenses. In return you will be paid a realistic trainee wage.

While the programmes offered are not exchanges we welcome any offer of exchange facilities. Applicants are encouraged to help provide a place for an incoming traineee, so fulfilling the aim of mutual support between member countries.

"It has been good to learn about cultural and professional differences. The experience has really helped me and hopefully I helped my host company too."

"It has been very rewarding not just professionally but personally too. I would like to keep in touch with the friends and colleagues I have met."
